He recommended commissioners appoint a "neutral-type person" to fill the eight-month vacancy. "Someone that doesn't have ambitions to be the next sheriff," said Blasingame. However the sheriff's slot is filled, it should be done with sheriff's department employees in mind, Blasingame suggested.

The department will have to face a transition in May when Tomlinson's replacement comes in and another one next January when the newly-elected sheriff takes office, he said. "It needs to be as easy as possible on the employees," Blasingame emphasized. Hood County Republican Party Chairman Fred Bleck stated his party presently has no plans to recommend someone as interim sheriff. Chief Deputy Doug Johnson is (Please see SHERIFF, PJA) appointment, but adds he's not interested anyway. If a sheriff candidate is appointed, it would create much controversy, he believes.

Cleveland stated commissioners will "set up formal procedure for making that appointment." Guidelines will be set to compare education and experience qualifications of candidates, he added. Commissioners met in executive session Tuesday morning to accept Tomlinson's resignation and discuss guidelines for appointing an interim sheriff. Appointing a replacement for Sheriff Edwin Tomlinson has been no exception. Since Tomlinson announced Friday that he's retiring May 1, residents have been busy guessing who will be appointed as interim sheriff until a new sheriff takes office next January. There have been as many names mentioned as candidates as there are hours in the day. But there's one thing for certain.

Hood County Democratic Party Chairman R.L. Gregg states his party will recommend that Democratic sheriff hopeful Rodney Jeanis be appointed as interim sheriff. Republican contender Ronnie Blasingame states no one has approached him about an interim to nominate him," said Gregg. Jeanis stated he had been approached by Gregg about the interim sheriff nomination. Jeanis also said he would take the job if appointed.

However, Jeanis warned of the dangers of a sheriff appointed by commissioners. That sheriff would be answerable only to commissioners and not the people, he said. Blasingame doesn't want the interim appointment. "I 'd rather just wait until November. Let the public decide," he said.
