married Faye Alexander Nov 2. 1924 in Paluxy He had been a resident of Fort Worth for the past seven BIBLE THOUGHTS by DUB McCLISH THE ADEQUATE CAUSE Our world seems to be turning more and more away from belief in God. The general frame of reference in which people live nowadays in secular rather than spiritual. Yet, there are still millions who tenaciously cling to their faith in God. Upon what grounds can modern, sophisticated, intelligent men still believe in Many reasons could be given that relate to what the Bible says, but since many do not believe in the Bible, let us look elsewhere.

Even the most vocal atheist would admit that every effect must have a cause, moreover, an adequate cause. One might hold up a clock and say that a monkey designed and made it. The clock is the effect and the monkey is suggested as the cause. However, rational people would correctly conclude that a monkey is not an adequate cause to effect a clock. Our universe and our own bodies are much more intricate than a clock.

The atheist must not only find a cause for these effects, but an adequate and sufficient cause. Either we and our world have always existed or we had a beginning. If we were eternal we would not die and our world and its resources would not be subject to depletion and decay. Since our physical world and our physical selves are not eternal, we had to have a beginning. Since we began at sometime, we had to have a cause of beginning.

Since we and our world are not eternal, but had a beginning, we could have begun in one of only three possible ways: 1) We created ourselves. Did any creature ever make itself? If so, it was able to create before it was created! Only a fool would so contend. 2) Our world and ourselves are things that "just happened" (so the evolutionist argues). Not even a paper clip "just happens' by accident, how much less man and the universe! 3) We and our world were designed and produced by an adequate cause, for which only the God revealed and described in the Bible qualifies. What sort of force would constitute an adequate cause of man and the universe? 1) He would have to possess all knowledge and wisdom.

The marvelous order, the glorious beauty, the precision of operation, the harmony and dependability of natural laws seen in our universe require such knowledge and wisdom of their cause. 2) He must be all-powerful in the use of his knowledge and wisdom. The lofty mountains, the fathomless oceans, the multiplicity of life-forms, the of life in the seed, the intricacies of the human brain or eye all power attest to unlimited power capable of the most delicate control. 3) He must himself be eternal. He could no more make himself than man could.

Neither could he have begun spontaneously or accidentally, any more than man could have. The Bible reveals this self-sufficient, eternal Creator to us, tells us his name is Jehovah God and describes how he brought the universe and man into existence! God alone is the ADEQUATE CAUSE.
