The crowd was curious-anxious to see if Mitchell would actually hang. He had a large family and it was known they had hoped to free their patriarch.

Only two days be-- forerMitcheD's youngest sonr-v Jeff, had been killed by jail guards as he tried to sneak a gun and some poison to his father inside. Suddenly a group of several young horsemen rode into the crowd with guns drawn, shooting wildly into the air. There was a moment of panic in the crowd as they thought the Mitchells had come to free the old man. Turner remembered hiding 'behind a wagon and watching through the spokes as the horsemen noisfly made then-way through the frightened throng. Eberhardt took off running for his life not to be seen again until after the hanging when he was found down the lull in Granbury.

The riders turned out to be only rowdy pranksters and they eventually tired of their game and rode off, leaving the crowd to thankfully compose itself. Finally, a wagon pulled into view. Sheriff A.J. Wright was driving and in the back sat Mitchell. One of the young boy's most vivid memories, one he carried with him for life, was of the condemed man's appearance as he approached the hanging site.

He rode sitting straight-backed on the top of the homemade coffin in which he was to be buried. The noose was already around his neck Opening ZD rl. SEMIGNY SAVINGS! N6t' available in all stores. What had been intended as an exciting boyhood outing, turned out to have a lifelong impact on Turner a memory that was with him throughout his life. It was stOl dark outside that morning of Friday, Oct. 9, 1875 as 10-year-old Dave Turner and his friend Parks Eberhart excitedly got ready to saddle their horses for the long ride to the county seat in Granbury. A group of the people from the area, about five miles east of Tolar were going into town to see the hanging of Cooney Mitchell and the boys had gotten permission to go along.

Mitchell had been convicted of murder in a controversial trial and was still declaring his innocence. The group rode out to the area presently known as the reunion grounds and joined the huge crowd that filled the hillside. People of all ages, even whole families, had 7 1313 S. Morean. t.

A wind had gotten up and it tossed the somber old man's long grey hair and beard and he stared unmovingly at the crowd. The wagon finally pulled to a stop with the bed beneath a tree in the low place north of town, with the surrounding hillside forming natural theatre for the spectators.

Mitchell was then given an opportunity to speak and apparently delivered quite a speech proclaiming his innocence. Young Turner was deeply moved and remembered crying as the crowd began chanting ''Goodbye and the wagon was pulled from beneath his feet. The details following the hanging grew hazy with the passage of time with the exception of the heavy sense of sadness which Turner could not throw off. The party of riders mounted up, went to find Eberhart and headed home, a destination they did hot reach until long after dark. As an old man, Turner related to his family he didn't sleep that night at all.

The memory of the hanging was with him for a long, long time. Turner died in the middle sixties at the age of 100.
