Education Education Saturday, March 1, 2008 www.hcnews.com Hood County News 11A SCHOOL ROUNDUP The Stowaways from Granbury High School brought home numerous awards from a recent competition at Fossil Ridge High School in Keller. The Stowaways were named runner-up Grand Champion of Small Varsity Teams. They received a Division 1 rating on their military, modern and novelty routines earning them a Super Sweepstakes team trophy. They also received Best in Class for both the modern and military. The officers received Division 1 ratings for their jazz, novelty and lyrical routines.

They won Most Outstanding Officer group as well as Best in Class for both their jazz and lyrical routines. The officers are captain Erin first lieutenant Jenny Gomez, senior lieutenant Shana Jeter, junior lieutenant Mindy Hays and sophomore lieutenant Michelle Behrens. Tryouts for the 2008-09 school year will be held April 7-11. For more information, call Susan Pearson at 817- 4084600. CHICKENPOX Parents of students in four classes at Mambrino School are receiving notification about several cases of chickenpox at the school.

The nurse, Melisa Monson, distributed the letter from the Texas Department of State Health Services (TDSHS) to make these parents aware of the situation. TDSHS held a free vaccination clinic at the school this week. A series of required forms from TDSHS was distributed to the parents along with the notification letter. Monson and other school officials are assisting parents of the qualifying students with obtaining the vaccinations. According to TDSHS, varicella (chickenpox) is a very contagious disease and easily spread through droplets by sneezing, by coughing or through contact with sores.

Studies show that the vaccine can prevent infection or reduce the severity of the disease. Individuals with questions may contact Mambrino School at 817-408-4900. MONDAY HOLIDAY Students in Granbury ISD will have a holiday on Monday after finishing the fourth six weeks of the school year. This will be a workday and professional development day for teachers and staff. STARS Academy will have a regular school day.

For this teacher and staff workday, the Extended School Day Program will be consolidated at Emma Roberson Elementary School. The program will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Students attending will need to bring a sack lunch. ED The Granbury ISD Community Education Office will be offering a Drivers Education Class beginning on April 14.

The classroom portion will be held from p.m. on Monday through Friday in the lecture room at Granbury High School. Curtis Allen will be the instructor. Students must be 15 years old before the class ends. There is a limit to 36 students per class.

The class will last for four to six weeks and finish during the middle of May. Registration forms should be completed and signed by a parent or legal guardian and returned to the GISD Community Education Office with the enrollment fee. Forms are available in the offices of Granbury High School, Crossland Ninth Grade Center, and the Community Education Office. SCHOLARSHIP WINNER Tara Wilson, 16, of Tolarwas the first place winner at the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo Paint Horse Show held Feb. 1314.

She received the $10,000 scholarship. Wilson showed her horse Impulsive Adventure, known as Booster. She has also placed in the top five at the Paint World Show in Youth Cutting and in the top ten in Western Horsemanship in 2005. Tara attends Tolar High School and is involved in basketball, track, cross country, FFA and 4-H. She expressed happiness over winning the scholarship, saying that it will help a lot in paying for college and getting a better education.

SFA LIST Joshua Paschal Cobb of Granbury has been named to the List at Stephen F. Austin University for the fall 2007 semester. He is a biology major. LONGTIME TEACHER Longtime Granbury ISD teacher Linda Moser turned 50 this week. She is a physical education teacher at Mambrino School.

She has served the district as a special education teacher and art teacher in the past. EXIT-LEVEL TESTS Students needing to take exit-level state exams can do so at Granbury High School and STARS Academy Monday through Friday. Although the deadline for online registration was Jan. 25, these individuals may register on the day of the exam. The tests will be administered according to the following schedules: Monday Social Studies Wednesday Arts, Writing Thursday Mathematics Friday Science, Reading The Texas Education Agency recently modified the testing schedule to avoid a conflict with the primary election, which will be held on Tuesday.

TAKS TESTS Several grade levels of Granbury ISD students will be taking state-mandated tests on Wednesday. The Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS), which is required by state law and regulations issued by the Texas Education Agency (TEA), evaluates student performance in various subject areas. The tests that will be administered on Wednesday are: Reading, Grades 3, 5, 8, 9 Writing, Grades 4, 7 Arts, Grades 10-11 (Exit Level) For more information, contact Mrs. Thomas at 817-408-4035.

SAFETY AWARD: Granbury superintendent William Harris, fl anked by Claims Administrative Services, was presented a safety management award from CAS for achieving the best loss control results among the 470 school districts participating in the CAS compensation Association Plan. Granbury ISD recently received a safety management award from Claims Administrative Services (CAS) for achieving the best loss control results among the 470 school districts participating in the CAS compensation Association Plan. Superintendent William Harris was recognized by CAS on Jan 28 during the Mid-Winter Conference of the Texas Association of School Administrators. The award was presented for success in implementing safety programs designed to prevent injuries in the workplace. CAS president Bill Costanza said, ISD should be congratulated for their commitment to workplace safety and cost control.
